Ahhhhh

Ahhhh. That word applies to three things today.

First. I finished my pink TV blanket today. Yay me! It is sewn, tied, and keeping me comfy warm. "Ahhhh - this new blanket feels so good!" There's a storm in the distance so a new TV blanket is a good thing.

Second. Dad has had a couple of stress filled days at work. Those don't happen very often. But some pretty important stuff was happening and Doug was involved with it. So when he got home he released a long heartfelt, "Ahhhh." He's really glad to be done with it.

Third. We saw an awesome rainbow on the way home from eating out. It was a really bright rainbow. It was a complete one too - from one pot of gold to the other. Doug told me he saw a Leprechaun sliding down the rainbow. But it got a huge "Ahhhh" too. There were hints of double rainbow but it never got very bright. What a way to end the day. (Picture doesn't do it justice.)

Busy

What keeps me busy. Well I have been working on this lovely t-shirt quilt. I have made one for 3 of my kids. This is the last one I need to do to be fair and even.
I am also busy making myself, yes that means for me, a new small TV blanket. The orange one I have is over 20 years old and is looking pretty ratty. I decided to get some material and make myself a new one in pinks. I have made all the triangle edging pieces and have them stitched onto the top piece. The flannel backing is tennis themed. Appropriate. I will need someone to help me tie the blankets. Any volunteers? I didn't think so.

I am also busy trying to make tasty bread. Mom gave me a delicious molasses bread recipe the other day. I've made it a few times and it is delicious. This particular recipe is a knock off for the bread you get at Black Angus. I must say it is very tasty. I am also going to get the book called "Artisan bread in 5 minutes a day" or "Heathy bread in 5 minutes a day". If' I'm feeling rich I'll get both. Those books have a technique that you can make and store bread dough in the fridge. Then you just pull out enough to make a loaf every day - a loaf of crusty delicious and healthy bread. My mouth waters when I consider the possibilities.

Worm

The rain has finally stopped. Now I have a worm problem. The worms got water-logged with all our rain (almost 4 inches) and squirmed up out of the dirt. They inched along to someplace - anyplace to get a breath of fresh air. But Phoenix worms don't get much practice and they headed the wrong way.

I have no less than 35 squiggly worms in varying stages of dehydration on my front porch. Now what do I do? Worm soup anyone?

Rain - better known as "Wet #2" (see past posts)

As per weather forecasts, we have rain. It was a beautifully clear and sunny day yesterday. Nary a wisp of a cloud in sight. The birds were singing and carrying on. People played tennis (me). Riding bikes was a good idea (Becky). Well you get the picture.

But last night after we went to bed the rain started. It continues to rain. We are told it will rain all day today. It will rain really really hard tonight. It will rain on Friday and probably Saturday too.

The average rainfall for a year in Phoenix is 7" or so. Last year we only had three point something inches of rain for the whole year. This storm promises to bring about 4 inches to the area. That will be amazing! And do I believe it? Yes, I do. The weatherman gets it right this time.

I have made a few observations:

1. We are desert people and aren't used to rain. Most of us love it. We like to sit out on our porches and watch the storms. But this house doesn't lend itself to "porch sitting storm watching". I guess I could sit on the back porch but then I could only see the wall. I like to see the street, cars happening by, the rain drops falling through the light of street lamps, water flowing in the gutters, etc. I am missing my front porch viewing.

2. Most people don't own umbrellas in Phoenix. It doesn't rain often enough. We just don't usually need them. Having one today might be nice. Those of us who do own umbrellas (I own 2 or 3) don't like using them. We don't like toting them around. After you use the umbrella to keep you dry on your walk from the car, what do you do with it then? You shake it off (getting yourself wet), try to fold it up (getting yourself wet), and carry it around (getting yourself wet). So what's the use. Maybe some umbrella aficionado can help me with the intricacies of umbrella usage.

3. When it rains we don't like getting our feet wet. I don't know if people from wetter areas have waterproof shoes or if they just get used to having wet feet. But everyone here does the same tippy toe shuffle/jump/hop to get over, around, or through standing puddles of water. I walked through a parking lot and across campus to get to my exercise class and I found myself leaping, stutter stepping, giant stepping, and well, tippy toe shuffling all the way to aerobics. I saw a campus security person doing the same thing and had to laugh out loud. It was funny. The water was like 6 inches deep he wasn't keeping his feet dry at all. But he went through the motions anyway. I guess he might have kept his ankles dry. But heck that isn't too hard.

4. We usually find out when it rains that our windshield wipers are useless. They bake all summer and get hard and cracked. Then when we really need them, once a year, they fail us. I happen to be lucky. The truck windshield wipers worked like a charm for me today.

Those are all my thought on Rain - better known as "Wet #2" (see post from January 20th)

THREE WEEKS

Just in case anyone wants to know, Isaac arrives home in THREE WEEKS.

Wet

It is wet here.

We have rain this week. You heard me right - this whole week - Monday through Friday. And this is not our typical rain. Nope. Not hit or miss. Not this sketchy "trace" of rain stuff. Not having to measure like my dad used to (he would call it a "6 inch rain" when the space between the drops on the ground was 6 inches - that sounds better than "it's sprinkling".) This is the real stuff. A few observations about the event.

1. As the rain drains off the roof of our new house - front entry - it rinses all the dirt off the roof tiles and onto our entry. I get wet when I try to sweep the mud away.

2. Our front entry is painted with nice looking epoxy. This epoxy is extremely slippery when wet. We almost feel like we need a "Slippery When Wet" sign. We don't want friends and neighbors suing us if they slip and fall. A friendly warning up front should cover any negligence on our part. Right?

3. The rain leaked into our garage under both doors leading to the outside world. Nothing too serious. But if it keeps raining - we may have to get some sandbags or something. We don't want our junk, err I mean valuables, getting wet.

4. We have a serious patch of weeds growing in the back yard. They seem to thrive along the south fence - without watering. They did not need this rain! We don't want to encourage permanent residence! I'm afraid they love getting wet.

5. Our hummingbirds come and eat even during the rain. So if the rain continues, I'll have to refill their nectar containers and get wet myself. I don't mind though. I could always use a good shower.

6. This morning when I got the newspaper - everything was dry and the sky was totally clear. Where did all the rain go? Not even my feet got wet.

7. After having such a hearty rain storm yesterday - the weatherman announced that the "REAL STORM" is still coming. Does that mean we didn't get a rain storm yesterday? Or maybe we don't know what a rain storm really is? Whatever, it should arrive Thursday. And we will all get WET!

Hits

What a wonderful Christmas! We enjoy the most beautiful weather at Christmastime here in Phoenix. Just ask the Kevan's. They were here with us and they really liked our weather better than what they left in Springville! I'd say that our weather was a big HIT!

Because the weather was so great we were able to go to the zoo one day. It was beautiful! We also went to my friend's house and see her dog, chickens, and horses close up. The black horse seemed to enjoy licking and nibbling on Rob! Sadie kept busy trying to hug all the animals. That trip was a HIT too!

My best find as far as giving gifts go, in my humble opinion, was the comfortable lounging and/or pajama pants that I got the guys. They looked like old, faded, raggedy, torn jeans. A big HIT!

Sadie got a new doll that she loved. It had batteries and a switch so that it could make baby babbling sounds and move a little bit. That was a big HIT with Sadie.

I got two Amaryllis bulbs and planted them. They were pretty slow and I dispaired that they wouldn't bloom at all. But alas I got one of them to bloom on Christmas Day - two beautiful red flowers opened up. Another HIT!

A friend of mine showed me a cool Christmas Decoration at her apartment last year. It was called Santa's Marching Band and she bought it long ago. It had a Santa and other marching band members that each had 2 bells and a clanger. As the switch is turned on the decoration plays 35 different Christmas songs with each character swiveling either left or right to hit the appropriate bell. It is really cute. I loved it sooo much that I went home and started looking for it. I found one on ebay and set myself up for the bidding. In the last few seconds there was a flurry of bids and I ended up winning the item. The item came after Christmas so I didn't get to display it until this year. It was so fun and cute!

A BIG HIT!!

As far a gifts for me - I loved them all. Thanks to Lindsey for crocheting me a couple of things plus a set of the cutest refrigerator magnets I've ever seen. They are a HIT. Thanks to Shanna for making me the bestest apron ever. I love it - a real HIT! My mom "gave" us a large and beautifully framed photo of the Mesa Temple in Sepia tones. It looks great in the Family Room - a HIT for sure. Mom and Dad Selin "gave" us a big framed photo of the Salt Lake Temple in black and white - it hangs in the Living Room. It is a definite HIT. Doug came up with a big HIT too. It was the project that he was working on through Christmas Eve Day. He made me an cool stand for my Girls Camp Hiking Stick. I love it - it was a big HIT. It is now displayed in our entry!

A very memorable Christmas with many big HITS!

Birth-Day

I'd like to introduce you to my new grandson, Tank - oops. I mean Calvin Evan Selin. He was born today, January 6th, to Evan and Shanna. He came via C-section and weighing 6 pounds and 13 ounces. Evan doesn't yet respond to his own new name - "DAD". Just wanted everyone to know.
