Disc Golf

Evan brought his disc golf discs - frisbees - and found a course for us to play on while everyone except Rob was here for Christmas. It was a beautiful day and everyone loved being outside and having some fun. The course is found in a channel that serves as a flood control feature in which water flows when it rains. "Up stream", near our old neighborhood it is called the overflow canal and looks just like a canal. It is lined with cement and everything. At a certain point it loses the cement lining and begins to widen out and the sides get less steep and then we have an area that can be designed and used for recreation. All the surrounding neighborhoods along the way are designed to have their runoff drain into this area. There are playgrounds, basketball courts, bike paths, and evidently disc golf courses designed into these areas. And usually the play areas are quite accessible with no problems.

Our problem was that there was a pretty good rain not long before our planned outing. We got there and encountered some muddy conditions. We also saw evidence that the water had been running down with gusto. Interesting. While we were there Shanna asked me why we have a canal with water running through it just adjacent to the area we were in. I said that Phoenix uses it for water. She was pretty concerned to think it might be used for drinking water. I just let the topic drop because I didn't want to gross her out - but it is indeed used as drinking water. Of course, it is run through a water treatment plant first and purified and prepared but it is our drinking water.

Even though we all tried our hardest I think Evan was the winner by far! But Shanna did finish first on one "hole". We really enjoyed the activity and with some muddy shoes and pants with mud around the ankles we headed back home for some more food and family time.

That was fun. Too bad I don't know how to throw a frisbee. I think it was best that I played with the kiddos the whole time. :)
